The Last Frontier: Space travel in 2027?

Ground Control to Major Tom... its Astronaut Colin Bennett!

Virgin Galactic's spaceflight program has fully embraced the last frontier and sent so many "civilians" to outer space already - by 2027, there will be three flights a week heading up to the great unknown.

Many thanks to Intriq Journey and Petrie (Linda ❤️ ) for the invite. You really are elevating luxury travel in Asia up to the ultimate level. Private islands, exotic destinations, bah humbug, look up at the stars for extra-terrestrial inspiration.

To pilfer a quote from Carl Sagan, "That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there-on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam."

The Absolute Perfection of The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai:

Ah Taj... sigh.

Luck and other people's great fortune (!) has afforded me multiple stays at this... something greater than "hotel"...

How do I explain this phenomenon to the world outside who has never set foot at this pile of brick and mortar in Mumbai that is greater than the sum of its parts...

There are almighty tomes written about the place, but here's my 2 Hong Kong cents;

The Taj Mahal Palace stands as Mumbai’s undisputed icon of grandeur and timeless elegance. Opened in 1903 by visionary industrialist Jamsetji Tata, this heritage masterpiece in Colaba, overlooking the Arabian Sea and Gateway of India, was built in defiant Indo-Saracenic style, blending Moorish domes, Rajput flourishes, Florentine Renaissance, and Oriental details into pure architectural poetry. Its soaring central dome, built on Eiffel Tower scaffolding, has welcomed royalty, dignitaries, and dreamers for over 120 years.

What makes it the greatest hotel isn’t merely its opulent history or prime location - it’s the way it consistently takes your breath away. Every stay feels like stepping into a living masterpiece. Service reaches perfection: warm, intuitive, and never intrusive. Staff anticipate needs with quiet grace, turning ordinary moments into cherished memories. Whether it’s personalized butler service or seamless attention to detail, the hospitality feels genuinely heartfelt.

And then there’s the sheer photogenic beauty. Every nook and corner - marble corridors, jewel-toned lounges, sea-facing balconies, and lush courtyards - invites awe. Even a cup of tea (admittedly pricey) becomes an event in such surroundings. The Taj doesn’t just host you; it envelops you in legacy, luxury, and unmistakable magic. No wonder it remains a destination in itself. Pure, unforgettable splendour. Found these images in the ol' camera from my last trip there...

The Art of the Invisible: Why Scott Dunn Is in a Class of Its Own

Forty years in, the British luxury travel company is still setting the bar as its newly opened Hong Kong office puts the city's ultra-high-net-worth travellers right at the centre of it.

By P. Ramakrishnan · May 2026

There is a particular kind of travel that most people never quite experience. Not the kind defined by first-class seats or five-star suites (though those are part of it!) but the kind where absolutely nothing goes wrong, where every detail has been thought of before you knew you needed it, and where the trip you return from is quietly, almost imperceptibly, better than the trip you imagined when you booked it. That is what Scott Dunn does.

Founded in 1986 in the Swiss Alps by Andrew Dunn, the company started with a single, focused ambition: to make ski holidays genuinely exceptional. What began with a love of the mountains and an obsession with the finer points of service - warm chalets, private guides, meals that arrived without being asked for - has since grown into one of the world's most decorated luxury travel companies, operating across all seven continents and awarded Condé Nast Traveller's Top Travel Specialist in the World for thirteen consecutive years.

But the awards, impressive as they are, tell only half the story. What actually separates Scott Dunn from the rest of the market - from corporate travel agencies processing volumes, and even from other high-end operators who do much of what Scott Dunn does - comes down to something harder to quantify: a culture of care that runs through every layer of how the company operates. For this week's column, I wanted to find out the company's raison'd'etre. A deep dive.

What Makes the Difference: Not a travel agent. A relationship.

The distinction Scott Dunn makes, and earns, repeatedly, is the difference between delivering on your expectations and anticipating them. Most travel companies, even good ones, are in the business of logistics. They book well; they execute reliably. Scott Dunn does all of that, but its underlying model is something closer to a trusted personal adviser than a booking platform.

Every guest is paired with a dedicated Travel Specialist who is an expert in their specific destination. These are not generalists working from brochures - they are people who have been to the lodges, walked the trails, eaten at the restaurants, and built personal relationships with the local guides and hotel managers they recommend. The planning process begins not with a quote but with a discovery call: who is travelling, what they care about, what kind of pace they prefer, what they've done before and didn't love, and what they're secretly hoping for but haven't quite articulated yet.

"We do this through our four key pillars; unique to you, seamless service, carefully curated collections, and luxury in every sense. We believe your time away is precious and should be perfectly personalised to you."

That philosophy is not marketing copy. It translates into tangible decisions: the choice of a guide who happens to share your passion for Byzantine history; the lodge selected not just for its views but because the head tracker there has an uncanny record with leopard sightings; the restaurant reservation confirmed before you've landed. The company also maintains its own in-house Crisis Management Team -  an unusual commitment that means if something goes wrong while you're travelling, there is a dedicated team whose entire job is to fix it, not a call centre routing you through a script typed in Calcutta [revealing something there from my own travels!].

Real Stories : When it mattered most: two moments that define the brand

Testimonials are easy to collect and easy to dismiss. But two specific instances, documented through verified customer reviews, speak to something real about how Scott Dunn operates under pressure.

The first involves a couple travelling to Nepal and Bhutan, a trip they had long anticipated. The night before their scheduled departure, war broke out in Iran, and their routed flights via Qatar were cancelled with no notice. For most travellers, this would mean hours of hold music, missed days, and a holiday beginning in stress rather than ease.

"The night before we were due to leave war broke out in Iran and our flight via Qatar was cancelled but Scott Dunn managed to move our flights with hardly any notice and we went via Istanbul. Fabulous service."
-- Verified Trustpilot Review, Nepal & Bhutan trip

Scott Dunn rerouted them through Istanbul with, in the guest's own words, "hardly any notice." The holiday departed on time. The guest's account is matter-of-fact, which in its own way is the point - that a geopolitical crisis was resolved with the ease of a minor schedule adjustment. That is not luck. It is the result of having the right relationships with airlines and ground operators, and a team with the mandate and the instinct to act rather than wait.

The second example is quieter, but in some ways more revealing. A couple booked their honeymoon to Peru through Scott Dunn, working with the brand's resident Travel Specialist, to plan what would be a once-in-a-lifetime trip. The logistics (flights, transfers, lodges, the Inca Trail) were all handled impeccably. But Scott Dunn did something more.

"Scott Dunn went above and beyond, at every turn, to make sure that our honeymoon felt truly special to us. They communicated with every hotel we stayed at to leave a special note/treat. We could not be more grateful for the attention to small details."
-- Verified Trustpilot Review, Peru honeymoon

Nobody asked them to do this. There was no checkbox on the booking form for "personal touches at every property." It was, instead, the behaviour of a team that had genuinely paid attention during the discovery call, understood what this trip meant to its guests, and took quiet action to make it feel that way throughout. This is the invisible work that no five-star hotel can replicate independently - it requires someone who knows your whole story, not just your room and champagne preferences.

Hong Kong & Asia Pacific : Scott Dunn Private comes to Hong Kong - and it matters for this city's travellers

For Hong Kong's ultra-high-net-worth community, the news most worth noting arrived late last year: Scott Dunn Private, the company's invitation-only tier for its highest-net-worth clients, quietly opened a new office in the city.

Scott Dunn Private operates on a different plane from even the company's standard luxury offering. It is, in the company's own description, akin to having a wealth manager for your travel - a dedicated Relationship Manager who builds a deep, longitudinal understanding of your lifestyle, your family, your interests, and your travel ambitions across the year, not just for one trip. Membership is fee-free, but the service is curated: it is designed for those whose trips routinely cross multiple continents, require complex logistics, demand total discretion, and involve travel that others might classify as simply impossible to arrange.

The division's head, Jules Maury - twice named among Robb Report's Masters of Luxury - has identified a particular shift in what drives UHNW travellers today. Six-figure bookings through Scott Dunn Private have risen 18 per cent year-on-year, but the motivation, he notes, has changed. Guests are less interested in accumulating destinations and increasingly focused on what the company calls purposeful travel: journeys designed to reconnect, to challenge, to contribute. A family expedition into New Zealand's high mountains. A private philanthropic project embedded within a safari. A cultural immersion that cannot be replicated by a scheduled tour group or a luxury agent who doesn't know the difference.

"The 1% are seeking life-changing journeys and we are the conduits."
-- Jules Maury, Head of Scott Dunn Private

For Hong Kong specifically, this is a compelling proposition. The city's UHNW population is sophisticated, internationally mobile, and - crucially - time-poor. The greatest luxury here is not exclusivity for its own sake, but the absolute confidence that every hour of a trip is spent doing exactly what you intended to do, rather than resolving what went wrong. Scott Dunn's ACE portfolio -- access, connection, and experiences -- offers the kind of extraordinary moments that are effectively unavailable through independent research: private access to Augusta National's greens, pit lane access on F1 race day, Wimbledon Centre Court for a final, after-hours visits to the Pyramids. These are not experiences that can be bought on a website. They are the product of decades of carefully maintained relationships.

There is also a growing appetite among Hong Kong's UHNW families for experiences that include the next generation meaningfully -- not just tolerating children on a trip but building itineraries that create genuine memory and engagement for young travellers alongside their parents. Scott Dunn pioneered family travel with its Explorers kids clubs back in 2000, and that institutional knowledge translates directly: multigenerational trips designed so that a grandparent's bucket list and a teenager's need for adventure and a parent's desire for stillness can coexist within the same journey, without compromise.

The Bottom Line : Why this should matter to you

Travel at the highest level is, ultimately, about time. The ultra-high-net-worth traveller has the resources to go anywhere. What they cannot buy back is the time spent on hold, the evening lost to a logistics problem, the moment of a trip that should have been extraordinary but was merely fine. Scott Dunn's value proposition is precisely the elimination of those losses -- and the quiet amplification of what remains.

The Nepal couple who took off on time despite a geopolitical crisis. The honeymoon couple who discovered a personal note waiting for them at every property. These are not anecdotes about luck. They are the natural result of a company that has spent forty years building the systems, the relationships, and the culture that makes that level of service possible - and that is now, with its new Hong Kong office, bringing all of it directly to one of Asia's most demanding and discerning travel markets.

The best travel, the kind you actually remember, rarely announces itself loudly. It simply unfolds exactly as it should - which, when you stop to think about it, is the hardest thing in the world to arrange.

Scott Dunn Private has offices in London, New York, Singapore, and Hong Kong. Membership enquiries for the Asia-Pacific region can be directed through scottdunn.com.

This (A)Man is an Island: Review of Amanpulo, the finest resort in Asia

Ensconced in a serene private villa in paradise – renamed Amanpulo – P.Ramakrishnan is left pondering John Donne’s poetry and the lifestyle of the one percent.

Upon our arrival in Manila, we sail through immigration and into private cars waiting to take us to a mini-airport. It isn’t quite an airport per se, even though our luggage is thoroughly searched and we’re patted down. My companion, a fashion editor, and I are fresh off respective ill-fated relationships that ended in mild resentment and bitter Facebook feuds, and the pat-down is “more action than I’ve had all year”, I mumble en route to the private lounge. Her rejoinder haunts me still. “Speak for yourself, luv,” she says while tossing her mane. Tart...

…is served as we sit in the plush lounge: warm ones, accompanied by generous drinks with those toothpick-umbrellas found mostly on postcards of those dreamy holidays that celebrities have. And we’re about to have, too.

I’m a nervous and reluctant flier, but fortunately the short flight on a private plane isn’t unpleasant. A glorious day embraces us as we fly over sun-kissed seas. Escape from the smog of 852 is welcome. God the sky is blue. Photo-shopped by the Almighty, surely?

Often ranked among the world’s best tropical hideaways, Amanpulo (peaceful island) has to be seen to be believed. Occupying the private Philippine island of Pamalican, at the northern end of the Sulu Sea between Palawan and Panay, it’s a low-lying resort with nary a skyscraper in sight. Pamalican is covered with a sandy jungle of thickets and bush, amid seven square kilometres of pristine coral reef, and we’re looking at grand vistas of greens and blues – the antithesis of Central. The island is two-and-a-half kilometres long and only 500 metres across at its widest point, so when the plane lands, I heave a sigh of relief and gasp at the same time. Belinda Carlyle was right: heaven is a place on earth.

As we alight, my friend does her best impression of Jackie O. Large shades covering her face, her palms shading her forehead, she trots down three steps to the tarmac and likes what she beholds. “S’all right innit.”

Indeed. An island where Brad and Angelina may or may not have holidayed far from the madding crowd and prying lenses of the paparazzi. Despite our blandishments, the uniformed staff will neither confirm nor deny the names of celebrities or royals who have chilled in this very paradise before us mortals.

Soon after landing, we’re met by the couple who manage the resort, and pleasantries are exchanged – but our eyes are on a magical vehicle that will provide us with more joy than champagne and caviar dreams: a pristine white buggy (a polished golf cart really), the only mode of transport through the grounds of Amanpulo.

The island resort, opened in 1993, is studded with “casitas”, twin-roofed bungalows in hillside and beachfront settings, loosely modelled after the Philippine bahay kubo (native dwelling), and generously sized villas. Having been chauffeured to our separate villas, we’re left alone with our luggage. Beautifully decorated, the interiors reflect the islands: pebble-washed walls, coconut-shell tables, rustic Palawan baskets that double as objets d’art, king-size beds with rattan headboards, sliding glass doors that open to outdoor decks and his-and-her divans.

After a gleeful buggy run around the property, I call on my neighbour, who’s already changed into one of the terry-cloth robes that hang in the large Cebu-marble bathroom. Calling it a bath “room” would be false advertising, however. It is, quite frankly, a “bath-partment”, with twin vanities, separate changing areas, a shower and an elegant bathtub lit by large windows with wooden shutters. An orchid pot in the middle of the bath-partment is spawning something wickedly beautiful.

While some may choose a hillside-view private villa or one of Amanpulo’s 29 Beach Casitas, each linked via a path that leads onto a white-sand beach, we choose beach-view villas. Now, let me wipe away my tears of joy before I describe this beach. The softest white sand known to mankind, constantly encroached upon by the most serene, azure-blue waters that lap into the island. Water so clear, you can see deep into the ocean. A visual anomaly to Victoria Harbour, which is more of a muddy green carpet that only metal can perforate, the waters encircling the shores here reveal what lies beneath the surface of the ocean. Apparently there’s life in water – I am witness with wonder. Fish. Turtles. Cute ones. What lies beneath is glorious.

I turn left to find…no one as far as the eye can see. To the right, more of nothing. Just a strip of white sand that goes straight and curves somewhere in the distance to circumnavigate the island. Hmm. Alone at last.

In the distance are hints of other private Amanpulo villas, all a few metres from the sea, with private swimming pools (for those who care not for the private ocean!) and separate bedroom, living and dining pavilions, an outdoor lounge and a kitchen. For families of various sizes, one-, two- and four-bedroom villas come with a cook and housekeeper, and a number enjoy beautiful garden settings.

It takes more than a day to get used to the overwhelming visceral sensations of all the above. It takes me two days to discover a functioning hammock hanging between two palm trees next to my villa. Copious chapters of a crime-thriller are read on said hammock until I espy a vicious gecko eyeing my suspended toes. After several shrieks – I am not one for brevity of words or bravery of deeds – the hammock reading comes to an end.

As we’re not honeymooners, unlike the few other guests we spot infrequently, at mealtime we’re led to the restaurant at the clubhouse. No need for names; there’s only one of each on this island. With views of Manamoc Island across the channel, we have perfectly scrumptious Asian and continental cuisine for lunch and dinner. We don’t care how the fresh ingredients are brought in, because who worries about the nitty-gritty in heaven?

On the first morning, however, we eat breakfast alone, under a large umbrella, with trays of fresh food served by the staff. Looking out as the sun rises over the waters, shards of colour and light awaken us from our somnambular state of bliss. John Donne wrote:

No man is an island,
Entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.

…and while biting into slices of honey melon and sipping a third cup of freshly brewed coffee, I resolve that life on that other island (where death and taxes awaited under the aegis of CY Leung) isn’t for me. I’ll sit here, tan gently under the shade of the swaying palms and write the great Asian novel. Give up my existence as a glorified typist, embrace my misanthropy and live the life of an artist and hermit. This man will be an island.

Sadly, though, my paycheck doesn’t match the reality check. Paradise will have to wait.

Great Escapes: Travel like a movie star to these resorts, private islands and luxury vacation hot spots

Cast yourself in a role of the lifestyles of the rich and famous courtesy of these holidays from heaven, writes P.Ramakrishnan

When Tom Cruise landed in Hong Kong for the premier of Mission: Impossible II he arrived on a private jet that he piloted. From the airport, he was whisked by chopper to the rooftop of The Peninsula where a private elevator delivered him down to a press conference. Sound tempting?

If you want a movie star experience then drop a line to Alan Rogers, of Red Carpet Enterprises (redcarpet.co.uk). The company specialises in holiday experiences that rival Hollywood jaunts. There is in fact a "Tom Cruise" package where you can fly to Cape Town, take private flight training lessons, choose a route before getting fitted for your own signature flight suit. With a pass to a military airspace in a Hawker Hunter fighter jet to thrust yourself skyward at speeds of 960km/h just 20m above the ground, you can grab the controls and try out all sorts of stomach-churning stunts. A weekend's high flying costs about HK$160,000. But that's the tip of the ice-berg.

"A 10th birthday celebration saw us hiring a battleship where the inside was themed like a football pitch," says Rogers. "An ex-England footballer played five-a-side with the boys' friends, who then finally presented him with a signed shirt and ball from his favourite team. We choose very carefully the appropriate venues and hotels for each occasion. Our travels find us in some of the best villas, venues and hotels in the world, sometimes rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous."

For a more children-centric experience, Red Carpet can provide a trip to Lapland. A visit to a reindeer farm, sled rides, races with huskies, snowmobile rides across frozen lakes and a stay in a private lodge. Let's call this the Marlon Brando experience.

For the last quarter of his life, the actor lived on a private island and rarely appeared beyond the confines of his tropical paradise. Before the terms "organic", and "going green" entered the vernacular, Brando was doing it all. For a private island fantasy, head to Ratua in Vanuatu (you can rent the island), a self-sufficient retreat with postcard views and luxurious villas. Dotted with a dozen Indonesian-style villas, made with 200-year-old teakwood, the private houses are furnished with natural material - the island has a no plastic policy.

The former coconut plantation gets all its consumables purchased in Indonesia and then shipped to Ratua. Most of the food is produced on the island or purchased locally, the goal of this resort is to leave a minimum carbon footprint. Spend afternoons horseback riding or canoeing, or snorkeling in the azure blue waters.

Having eaten, prayed and loved on screen for more than two decades, Julia Roberts has had many reasons to grin through an admirable career with hefty paycheques. She traipsed through Italy, India and Bali for her last film but it's hard to imagine Pretty Woman slumming it in Calcutta. Despite Roberts' legendary down-to-earth vibe, it seems impossible to envision that she stayed in a hut with nominal access to tap water.

Sher Bagh in India would be the sort of earth-friendly, animal-reserve-meets-glamorous-getaway that would suit the highest-paid actress in the world - and for those of her ilk. It's got all the ingredients the film had, but in a capsule of bug-free comfort. Tented camps at Sher Bagh are as legendary as some of its VIP guests. Impeccable service, incredible food, a communal feel and one-ness with nature loom large. The tents are fitted with air-conditioning, a 24/7 butler service (fancy a gin-and-tonic at 4am?) and the sort of plush surroundings that reek of Passage to India cinematic charms and regalia. Early morning scheduled safari rides to see the magnificent creatures that roam about - there are indeed tigers lurking in the distance, as the name suggests ("tiger garden" is the literal translation to Sher Bagh). As the tiger population decreases with each passing year, this reserve is the last of its kind in Asia. Conspicuous consumption meets conservation, the moment your Canon catches a yawning tiger at sunset, it'll be the experience you'll bore proceeding generations with. Cantor and jeep rides that ferry guests to and from the resort run like clockwork. The running joke of 'IST' (Indian standard time, where things happen at their own pace) doesn't fit the whopping bill (this isn't a location for backpackers), as everything runs to precision. A cocoon of extreme comfort and luxury awaits upon your return from the safari rides in the otherwise sweltering heat of Rajasthan.

Campfire meals and drinks, tales and folklore of prince and princes, epic love stories between Mughal Kings and a Rajput princess, it's live theatre with a Bollywood twist. Sunrise and sunsets in nearby parks (in particular the expansive Ranthambhore), it's all a bucolic and beautiful adventure. There are few people Oprah Winfrey would envy. With more than a billion dollars to spare, what could she possibly covet?

Gwyneth Paltrow's holiday, apparently. When the Oscar winner last appeared on Oprah, she relayed her trip across Spain with celebrity chef Mario Batali as she ate her way through the country. "I would love to do that," said the talk-show host. And here's how you can. Foodies looking for an experience in Spain should head to La Maroma. Set on a private hilltop in Andalucia, La Maroma (akvillas.com) enjoys grand views over almond and olive groves and the estate's private vineyard.

Expectedly, fresh olives, nuts and wine from the panoramic views that you see from your own rooms are brought in. The cortijo (a Spanish farmstead) has fused the rustic-chic style to provide modern luxuries (wi-fi, broadband, sub-terrain heating and air-conditioning) and comfort, but still maintains the traditional Andalusian architecture of its heritage (Spanish antiques and locally made hand-crafted furnishings litter the grounds). Hand-stitched Suzani tapestries above the beds, private indoor and outdoor lounges, terraces and pool that face different vistas that encircle the villa, it's the sort of place a star would seek respite from the paparazzi. But it's not just the scenic location that makes La Maroma stand out in a city teaming with grandiose holiday possibilities. It's the food. As you watch Batali and Paltrow go through an ever-changing and colourful menu, you can taste the sumptuous food shown on screen - but instead of schlepping from one location to another in the fetid heat, you can have it delivered to your table.

Guests staying at La Maroma can enjoy the "Instant Unwind" package, which includes organic produce, including an immense fruit and vegetable box delivered to your doorstep, shopping service for any additional provisions, fresh flower arrangements and wine tasting and tapas on arrival. Private four-course gourmet dinners, by villa chef David Palacios, alongside welcome hampers with local Spanish delicacies and basic provisions, are included.

The markets of Andalucia - Marbella, Fuengirola, Coin - are all nearby, as is the village of El Rampido where the protected reserve called the Paraje Natural Marismas del Rio Piedras y Flecha del Rompido lies. With the onsite wine bodega stocked with local wines, it's a festival of fresh food and drink. As Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt and her brood found solace in Africa to escape far from the madding crowd, they hit various parts of the continent, before culminating in Namibia where Jolie gave birth to their child. For some bush luxury, head to Camp Jabulani (akvillas.com). As a matter of extreme privacy, it has only six suites and its own herd of elephants.

Accredited by the Relais & Chateaux, Camp Jabulani is a family-owned and managed private luxury safari lodge within the Kapama Game Reserve in Hoedspruit, South Africa (in close proximity to the Kruger National Park, and scenic Mpumalanga region). The best part is a herd of trained elephants rescued by the local endangered species centre that roam the camp. Watching the animals in their natural, protected habitat as they swim and play is the National Geographic moment aspiring photographers dream of. And to further lift your spirits, there are hot-air balloon excursions.

With never more than a dozen guests at any given time, the exclusive Zindoga Villa is suited for the family traveller. Daily elephant safaris, safari drives in the Big Five private Kapama Reserve, indulgent treatments in the outdoor Therapy Lapa, culinary delights at the hands of the masterful chefs, with all the accoutrements of a luxury holiday with an elephant stamp of approval, this one's not to be missed.
