As budgets dwindled, ended up doing this shoot in my then living room. My usual dream team behind the scenes, Karen, Tasha, etc.  

Taner from Turkey is the most successful male model strutting around the island (he's also a DJ now) and shows no signs of slowing down with 20+ years in the biz.  For an advertorial, had to create a deck and pitch the man to an advertising client - so you can read up on him here.

 

Magazine cover stars with their pets: Favourite feature to collate

 

The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated,” said Gandhi. We concur. And now we’re measuring the greatness of our cover stars by peeking on their personal Instagram accounts and seeing how they handle their pets.

As expected, our favourite celebrities treat their beloved critters with just the right amount of love (immeasurable) and, well, truth be told, some major spoils. Take Paris Hilton (Prestige, June 2006 leading lady), she spent US$325,000 on a luxury doghouse for her furry four-legged friend. But we’re not looking for conspicuous consumption; for us, it’s endless cuddles that really matter.

Here’s a quick look at those lucky cats and dogs who constantly have stars in their eyes.

These cover shoots on location were... exhausting. But we got 'em done thanks to a great team.

24 hours before we went to print, this interview, profile and feature of supermodel Jon Kortajarena came in. He was working on a movie and called in between shots - and I had to stay up all night to write up the feature. Joys of high gloss, print magazine publishing... 

As usual, my friend and photographer Olivier Yoan did his magic with a dream team behind the scenes. 

The visuals, the layout, all worked... not sure anyone read my lengthy feature as this special menswear edition of the magazine was all about the look!

In 1994, when David “Mr Golf” Chu turned a patch of industrial wasteland in Shenzhen into the world’s largest golf course, it was seen as complete madness by many, including the provincial mayor. Golf was a nonentity in the country, frowned upon by the Communist Party ever since Mao Zedong declared the sport “too bourgeois”.

But David Chu’s vision paid off. Today, the Mission Hills Group dominates the golf industry in China, with huge multi-course resorts in Shenzhen, Dongguan and Hainan as well as hotels, leisure resorts, sports academies, schools, artist villages, malls and even a movie-themed theme park in Haikou called Movie Town.

But much of that expansion has been overseen by David’s son Tenniel, who works as vice chairman of the group alongside his brother Ken, the group’s chairman. Pioneering a so-called “golf and more” concept has broadened the popularity of the sport, helping to dust off the elite image it once held. Non-traditionalists might tut at the group’s more eccentric ideas – the upcoming Fantasy Course in Hainan features an island green with an 80-metre-wide bowl of noodles and 75-metre-long chopsticks serving as the lake – but the numbers don’t lie. Last year Mission Hills invested a total of 40 billion yuan in mainland China and the company is going from strength to strength.

Carmen Chu, Tenniel’s glamorous wife, is an arts enthusiast who balances being the mother of two children with her ongoing art history studies at the University of Hong Kong. She admits candidly that she decided to go back to university in order to understand more about the art world and also as a way of grounding herself against the seemingly endless series of parties and galas that come as a consequence of her husband’s jet-setting job.

Prestige magazine's latest cover feature: October 2021

 

Shot on Sept 1, out by October, Kevin Poon graces the cover of the latest Prestige magazine. Was good fun to chat with the star of the cover and after its initial release, we somehow seemed to have ruffled a few feathers. Hmm. Good. 

Big shout out to Hong Kong photographer Ricky Lo for yet another stunning cover. 

And the good people at Louis Vuitton in Hong Kong for the wardrobe and accessories. 

Death of an Indian Icon: A nation mourns the loss of Bollywood legend Sridevi

On this day, in the year 2018, legendary actress, star of a whopping 266 Indian films,  Sridevi died in Dubai, a case of fatal "accidental drowning," that sent seismic shockwaves through fans of Bollywood and Indian cinema.

A life-long fan, I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing the actress for a cover story for Post magazine back in 2012.
