Two Extraordinary Jewels Could Fetch Up to HK$95 Million and HK$80 Million at Christie’s Upcoming Auction

Hong Kong Luxury Week at Christie’s is all set to dazzle, but these two stones will shine the brightest at the upcoming auction.

As part of Hong Kong Luxury Week, Christie’s is set to showcase two exquisite pieces of jewellery—a 35.09-carat Kashmir sapphire and a 13.22-carat Burmese ruby ring—during the Magnificent Jewels live auction on 27 May 2025. Cartier’s New Tutti Tutti Collection Is a Story of Expression, Innovation, and Elegance

The new launch may have innovative design, structure, and colour scheme, but its approach is classic Cartier.

The latest chapter in the illustrious legacy of Cartier is Tutti Tutti, the latest addition to the Cartier Libre collection, a testament to the maison’s insatiable desire for innovation and artistic expression brought to life through a technicolour smorgasbord of accessories.

For the connoisseurs, the original Cartier Tutti Frutti high-jewellery collection was a game-changer for the French luxury brand as it captured the zeitgeist upon release back in the early 1920s. It was the Art Deco movement, its fashion and styles, and the mood of the moment captured in exquisite, precious stone as the maison’s high jewellery was dutifully embraced by high society. Lifting a leaf from that historic branch, the new Tutti Tutti collection enhances the narrative. Hot off the Cartier Libre auspices—the watch, jewellery, and accessories section of Cartier—the new pieces take a brazen look at bold fun.

A Designer For All Seasons: Celebrating 20 Years of Cindy Chao the Art Jewel

A landmark year for designer Cindy Chao, 20 years just floated by like a dragonfly in flight.

We’ve long covered—and not so secretly coveted—the exquisite works of designer Cindy Chao for years now as her sculptural, nature-inspired, museum-worthy jewels have been a point of fascination and debate: Is it jewellery, or is it art?

Her jewels have appeared in the pages of Robb Report Hong Kong’s annual Best of the Best, and intermittently in various iterations of Robb Report globally since 2012, such sporadic bursts of inspired creations finding a safe haven in the Best in Jewellery pages with increasing frequency. Chao’s earrings can be seen on the lobes of Academy-Award-winning actresses, her famed brooches on the lapel of gentlemen as they hit the red carpet. Chao’s singular sensations have also appeared in capital museums, guarded in enclosed glass cases, glimmering under a spotlight. How many jewellers can state that their work is part of the permanent collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, and the Smithsonian in Washington, DC?

This Is the Van Cleef & Arpels Secret That Was Outed at Watches and Wonders 2023

Van Cleef & Arpels’s newest watch, based on the Ludo bracelet, is the best-kept “secret” in town.
Watches and Wonders 2023 held in Geneva showcased the best of the horological world and we’ve covered many finds extensively over the past few days . Above all, we had to take a moment to recognise the “wonder” provided by the fine folks at Van Cleef & Arples, who directed their gilded spotlight on the Ludo secret watch earlier this year.

The story traces back to the revered maison’s Ludo bracelet, a sparkling accessory from 1934 reflecting the jazzy Art Deco vibe of the period. Look for the brick-pattern meshwork made so exquisitely and assembled by hand, and the symmetry and geometry of the repetitive pattern on its glistening strap that looks like a jewelled belt, designed “to deliver optimal articulation and flexibility,” as the brand states. It is a piece so well-liked, they named it after the co-founder Louis Arpels (called Ludo by those in his close-knit circle).

Creature of Paradise: Anna Hu’s Exquisite Jewellery

Jewellery artist Anna Hu’s Parisian haute joaillerie creations float like a butterfly.

It’s been a busy year for jewellery artist Anna Hu. She’s hopscotched around the globe to showcase her artistic assemblage of creations at newsworthy events. She joined The European Fine Art Foundation (TEFAF) in Maastricht for the second time in a row, where she was the only speaker representing high-jewellery exhibitors, alongside a panel of experts in the field of luxury. She generously donated a pair of Celestial Lotus earrings at the China Gala Auction, raising money for a worthy cause. And last but certainly not least, Hu presented her latest series of stunners in Paris, where she debuted the official launch of Papillon du Blanc as one of the Maison’s classic collection.

Robb Report Hong Kong: The Best in Jewellery, From Chaumet’s Encres Brooch Collection to Bulgari’s Serpenti Viper Necklace

Nature beckons, and it’s inspired the world’s finest jewellery designers and artisans to sculpt some stunning pieces. P.Ramakrishnan writes.

The Big Idea: The Talisman

Video Killed the Radio Star came out in 1979, the advent of something newer, shinier, trendier killing the old. VHS did the same to Betamax, and DVDs to VHS. Netflix bled Blockbuster dry, the iPhone choked Blackberry until it turned blue, Google muted Yahoo, and lab-grown diamonds did… well, what do you know. Almost nothing.

The supposed harbinger of doom caused many an editorial to foretell the end of the diamond monopoly, when lab-grown gemstones would be all the rage and the prices of mined diamonds would falter as centurion designer maisons would fall brick by brick for cheaper (well, less expensive) substitutes that perfectly mimicked nature’s majesty.

Sure, the fads made headlines pre-pandemic, but they didn’t make history. Sales of vintage, coloured, celebrity-owned, and royal jewels reached peak levels at auction; fashion houses known for their sartorial selections raised the stakes by stepping into high jewellery; long-standing European brands opened stores far from their shores; Asian designers broke records as esteemed auction houses saw only the gavel fall, not the prices, demand, or curiosity about precious gems displayed by the toniest brands in the world.

Breaking into unheard-of figures, the De Beers Blue sold for HK$450.9 million (US$57.4 million) at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong. The Juno Diamond, a pear-shaped rock weighing 101.41 carats, sold at US$12.9 million (HK$100.8 million) in New York to an Asian collector (in fact, among the top magnificent jewels auctions held last year, multiple winning bids came from Hong Kong). The talisman of doom went bust while the demand for rare stones and designer jewellery went boom even in the harshest of economic times. Perhaps some saw them as safe investments, with others simply finding beauty in bleak times.

While not as ephemeral as fashion, even jewellery sways—well, budges—to fad and trend. When we first started keeping tabs on the best of the year’s jewellery, spring was certainly in the air and we saw a pattern rising: nature as inspiration. Sure, not the first time, but the key is in the doing. In the first quarter of the pandemic, as news channels noted the return to and the return of nature, seemingly every creative of note saw and took comfort and inspiration. The birds and the bees tantalised the creative brush as flora, fauna, and feathers informed cut, colour, and motif.

And back to the commercial side, while the pandemic sent many a schedule off kilter—premieres and presentations were held off or a bit less lavish—a slew of beautiful pieces did make it to these shores, where they were eagerly awaited by those who didn’t fly private to Paris for a first sighting. And where they spread a little welcome light. As Elizabeth Taylor famously said, “You can’t cry on a diamond’s shoulder, and diamonds won’t keep you warm at night, but they’re sure fun when the sun shines.”

Jeweller Cindy Chao’s Hong Kong Exhibition Is Opening to Dazzling Butterfly Effect

Opera Gallery Hong Kong has never before showcased jewels of this size, magnitude, and intricacy

For the past decade, with consistency and artistic integrity, jeweller Cindy Chao has been painstakingly recreating a delicate creature in precious stones and metal, culminating in her 10th Annual Butterfly piece: 2023 Black Label Masterpiece I Amour Butterfly Brooch.

Her brand, CINDY CHAO The Art Jewel, presents an exhibition like no other this year. “Meld in Light and Shade” at the famed Opera Gallery Hong Kong is part of a global tour that also includes a stint in Shanghai and other Asian stops. For the city, it’s the first of its kind to have a jewelled, precious butterfly exhibition done by a leading female artist—for is there any doubt this jewellery artist’s work is nothing short of wearable, sculptural art?
