Rishi Kapoor in Hong Kong: The Birth Anniversary of the underrated actor who was once the prince of Bollywood!
A long career, a jobbing actor - after shedding the image of the leading man and designer-sweater wearing hero, strumming a guitar chasing after (increasingly younger) actresses, the actor in him reawakened in his second innings. So many memorable performances, a flood of awards were heading his away... alas fate had to deal a cruel hand and took him at the age of 67.
Remembering this fun shoot and interview with the thespian - the most fun and fear-induced (the man was larger than life and if he didn't like a question, my the volume went up!) interview, he was also witty, charming and the hard-earned laugh I got at the end of our chat was well worth it. When we met later at a dinner, I desperately wanted an autograph of Neetu Singh, his gorgeous and effortlessly elegant wife and former-co-star. He personally took me to her and made her sign my mighty tome Faces, which had portraits of the Kapoor family. I cherish the book. And the brief time we spent together.
Happy birthday Rishi Kapoor - wherever you are. The films, the music, the performances will live on. Om Shanti Om indeed.
