A Rare Collection of First-Vintage Wines from Bhutan is Heading to Auction

Calling all oenophiles—this one’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. 

In an extraordinary development for wine enthusiasts and collectors, Bonhams is set to auction the first-ever vintage of wine cultivated and produced in Bhutan. Set to take place from 3 to 24 April, this landmark event will feature a limited offering of just 48 bottles from the Bhutan Wine Company, making it a momentous occasion in the annals of viticulture.

Bonhams’ historic auction will showcase 48 bottles of Ser Kem—translating to “an offering of alcohol to the gods”—the inaugural bottling from the Bhutan Wine Company. Founded with the goal of introducing the world to Bhutan’s rich terroir, characterised by its pristine environment and high altitude, the unique venture’s first-ever harvest of wine grapes in Bhutan occurred in 2023, resulting in the creation of the Ser Kem bottlings, a special blend that encapsulates the essence of the region’s diverse grape varieties.

Art Central and Art Basel Hong Kong 2025

 

One of the great joys of Art Central, Art Basel (both occurring simultaneously and next door to each other--my poor, weary, tired, so very tired feet), is of course seeing some great art and meeting the artists, gallerists, art critics, editors, models, muses. Eg someone like Diane who is... I guess a bit of everything. 

Art Basel or Art Central? This year, I've got to say Art Central has the edge. 2025 Art Basel in Hong Kong was oversubscribed and chaotic--despite the innumerable, defo-interns and somewhat uniformed staff trying to appease the crowds of mostly self-proclaimed VIPs on opening day. The VIP preview was a classic case of, well, everyone's important. Ipso facto, no one is. And were treated as such. God bless the team as they kept their cool, while some notable names... um... didn't. 

Art Central's curated and diverse exhibits were more... what's the word.... fun? The art world takes itself so seriously... Everytime I see something pretentious and when a piece has to be over explained, my mind immediately goes to Ab Fab; 

Eddie: "It all looks like crap, it must be worth something..."

And when in doubt;

It's interesting to note that its not in fact Bollywood/Mumbai which has the largest contingency of massively wealthy Indians...

With the upcoming edition of this popular fair, Cheng reflects on the transformative power of art, particularly in the context of recovery and renewal following the global challenges of recent years. 

As he embarks on his second consecutive year curating the event, Cheng’s vision has evolved, embracing a deeper commitment to inclusivity and innovation. His initial foray into Art Central was informed by a desire to foster connection amidst the post-pandemic landscape. “Last year, my goal was to engage with audiences in the context of post-Covid recovery,” he says. “I wanted to encourage curiosity, and we succeeded in creating an event that many people could enjoy together.” For the 2025 edition of Art Central, he is taking his vision further, focusing on programming that supports emerging galleries, showcases legendary artists, and highlights photography as a significant medium.
