Behind the label: Fulham

Who started it? Toronto-based Canadian designer Laura Lee Fulham founded the eponymous jewellery label having inherited a love of accessories from her fashionable grandmother. All her shimmering pieces are made of vintage materials such as brass findings, chains and baubles, mixed with modern design elements to create an authentic costume jewellery look. If that sounds like a contradiction of terms it isn't; a mishmash of baroque detail with 18-carat gold, semi-precious stones, pearls as well as beads, feathers and crystal, each fun piece is a heady concoction of the costly and the cost-effective. A graduate in fashion marketing from Toronto's Ryerson University, Fulham's first gig as an assistant stylist in a leading women's magazine helped her find the treasure trove of references from the sensuous 1960s that inspired her brand.

Why we love it: the alluring shapes, playful baubles and kaleidoscope colours that Fulham uses are a return to the golden age of glamour. There's nothing subtle or small about them - these hefty looking trinkets account for the phrase, "statement pieces". We like the light-hearted, rather frivolous attitude of the brand and the chunkier hand-crafted pieces have been popular with celebrities such as Kristen Bell, Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez.

What we'd pick: sift through the glass display cases at Harvey Nichols to find the multicoloured, feather-coral-crystal beaded necklace (top left; HK$5,500), the three-toned kaleidoscope earrings (centre left; HK$4,800) or the purple-feathered bead and stone-studded cuff (below left; HK$3,300).

Where you can get it? Fulham is available at Harvey Nichols, The Landmark, Central, tel: 3695 3388; www.fulham.ca.
