Best Dressed at the Golden Globes 2019

Star Power

Eternal Favourite: Julia Roberts
What? Awards season kicked off in great style as the stars of Hollywood walked the red carpet at the Beverly Hilton for the 76th Golden Globes. Exactly a year after the genesis of the #metoo movement that saw almost every star wear black, it was business as usual as nominees and presenters alike embraced every hue for a return to classic glamour.

Boys on the side: In truth, rarely do men hog the fashion limelight as most wear standard – albeit designer – tuxedos; old favourites like Armani, Tom Ford, Berluti and Gucci. The millennials stood out with a few daring sartorial selects: Timothée Chalamet in Louis Vuitton (and Cartier jewellery!), Troye Sivan in a Prussian blue tuxedo by Calvin Klein, and winners Darren Criss in Dior Homme and Ben Whishaw in crystal-embellished Alexander McQueen.

Gowns and glory: There wasn’t a single what-the-f…ashion moment as nearly all the ladies looked their elegant best. The standouts included Lady Gaga – of course – in periwinkle Valentino and two assistants in tow to carry her lengthy train. Host, and winner, Sandra Oh donned three different outfits, two Versace and one Stella McCartney. And the rest you can see here, some with the best accessory of the night: their very own Golden Globe.

Sandra Oh in Stella McCartney and Forevermark diamonds.

Emily Blunt in custom Alexander McQueen and Emma Stone in Louis Vuitton.

Gemma Chan looked so good - had to post two pictures; the gorgeous actress in Valentino Haute Couture and Forevermark Diamonds.

Richard Madden in Giorgio Armani.

Glenn Close in Armani Prive, Jessica Chastian in Burberry and our all-time-favourite superstar Julia Roberts in Stella McCartney and Chopard.

More of Julia on the carpet...

Aishwarya Rai...

Having been in the magazine biz for 16 years, there's always some Indian aunty who has a daughter or friend's daughter who looks "just like Aishwarya Rai" and I should feature her in the magazine. Um. Yeah. Ok. Sure.

Model Citizen

My chat with Hong Kong's very own Eunis Chan in the April issue of Prestige magazine. The popular model talks about her brand, her collaboration and... sweaty men. lols. Seriously. Read up in the magazine - out on newsstands and all good stockists.

Man of the Moment

Nicholas Hoult in Dior

Dressed in Dior Men on the Oscars red carpet in February, Nicholas Hoult topped many a best-dressed list by taking an out-of-the-box approach to black tie in his wrap-around tuxedo. Yet you could say that Hoult’s career has been defined by his bold choices. He shot to fame, aged 10, in About a Boy before taking a punt on Tom Ford’s directorial debut, A Single Man. And last year we saw him gleefully powdered, coiffed and camp in The Favourite. Before he hits the road to promote two more mega films to be released this year, the 29-year-old actor sat for our cover shoot in London.

Unfailingly friendly and down-to-earth, Hoult arrived on time and even stayed late, on a Saturday no less, until we had the perfect shot. The new dad also shared stories of life with a newborn, impressing stylist Steven Doan with the fact that he and his girlfriend manage it all without the help of a nanny. What a man.

Celestial Bodies

SCREEN ACTORS GUILD AWARDS

What? The 25th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards was held at the end of January in Los Angeles and a firmament of stars preened for the cameras as they strutted into the Shrine Auditorium. Every celeb worth his/her grit doubled as a model for the biggest brands, showcasing the latest collections in all their Hollywood finery.

Gemma Chan in Oscar de la Renta and Harry Winston
Fashion yays: Gemma Chan continued her red-carpet reign with yet another faultless look and polished perfection in an Oscar de la Renta gown, Harry Winston jewels and Christian Louboutin heels – according to many fashion insiders, it was a toss between her and Margot Robbie, in Chanel, for the best-dressed accolade. Among a sea of glittering gowns, Louis Vuitton ambassador Emma Stone braved the flashbulbs in the brand’s embellished blouse and pants, looking gorgeous and comfortable (a rarity on the red carpet). Finally, we doff our hats to 81-year-old Jane Fonda, who continues to defy age and expectation by looking phenomenal in Maison Valentino. When asked what she thinks when she looks in the mirror, Fonda quipped, “Money well spent!”

Fashion nays: While we fawned over the ladies we yawned at the men dressed, predictably, in tuxedos. Now, while we aren’t the type to nitpick anybody’s rig – and usually prefer the sin of omission to ranting about the sartorial selects of overpaid stylists – we couldn’t help but pause at … well, Natalie Portman in a rather large bib, comedienne Busy Philipps in a busy print, Michelle Williams in metallic stripes and Janelle Monae in a tea cosy. Well, there’s always the Oscars to fix the designer damage. Watch this space in our next issue!

Sabyasachi's Western cuts

A while ago Sabya was in Hong Kong briefly as a capsule collection was sold in Lane Crawford - not sure if it still is. His eastern ethos in Western silhouette is.. interesting. Would work well for the Indian diaspora but would your average fashionista from the city sport it?! The millenials from Bollywood sure do it gloriously well...
