Carl Ng: Hong Kong's own

Saw Carl Ng while rushing through Central, Hong Kong and he's always got a word for me. Usually funny and mostly unprintable.

Born in pre-handover Hong Kong, 50-year-old actor Carl Ng spent his formative years navigating two distinct worlds. Sent to Surrey’s progressive Frensham Heights boarding school at age 12, he later earned a degree in global corporate strategy at the University of Westminster. Yet, while mastering business models in London, Ng was quietly honing a different ambition in evening classes at the Tony Grecos Acting Studio.

Inheriting his sharp, Anglo-Chinese features from his late father- the iconic Hong Kong screen star Richard Ng- and his mother Susan, a British stylist who famously coiffed Bruce Lee, Carl returned to Asia on his own terms. Before the camera caught him, he was living in Thailand as a certified scuba instructor. When he finally landed back in Hong Kong in the early 2000s, his 6-foot frame and carved jawline made him an instant modeling sensation, fronting major campaigns for Sony and Motorola. There was a massive three-storey poster of him with a beer in Times Square that imposed heavily on passersby.

The media, naturally, was obsessed. An infamous local tabloid print run featuring secretly snapped photos of Ng sunbathing nude at a beach cemented his early bad-boy mystique. But Ng steered his momentum straight into acting, bypassing easy nepotism by auditioning independently. His brooding intensity quickly translated to edgy celluloid projects: Yonfan’s cult erotic art drama Colour Blossoms (2004), the acclaimed crime prequel Infernal Affairs II (2003), and Olivier Assayas’ international thriller Boarding Gate (2006), along with a long-running TV star turn as DSP Glenn in Singapore's Point of Entry.

Steering clear of standard high-society socialite loops, Ng’s identity remains rooted in cinema and creative craft. Following his father’s passing in 2023, Ng keeps a relative low-profile stance. Blending European cool with East Asian grit, he selectively works on regional film sets while spending time outdoors, staying focused on fitness, and living on his own terms.

The picture is deceptive; he's the chill one.

Eurasian actor, model, DJ Tom Price answers the Robb Report Questionnaire

Throwback Thursday: Interview with Hong Kong actor/model/DJ/Graffiti Artist Tom Price. Reposted.

All original photography by Natalie Dunn, other images provided by Tom.

To kickstart the first fashion shoot for Robb Report Hong Kong, we knocked on the doors of… well, it’s the digital age, we DM’d the Instagram of multi-hyphenate Tom Price. Prolific touring DJ, Eurasian actor, and most importantly, dog-dad to Roxy, a gorgeous border collie.

Born and brought up in Hong Kong, of English and Chinese origin, the trilingual (Mandarin, Cantonese and English) Price fits into any mould you can carve him in. We needed someone who could balance a trapeze act, swing between the East and West (a novel idea natch) with equal ease, pull off a Tom Ford suit (which he’s modelled for in the past) and a surfboard with a studied nonchalance. We are all about contradictions like that.

Despite the fame and following (see how young girls titter in his presence), he’s got his priorities set straight. “Family, work, dog!” As its often been said before, the Price is right.

His film and television appearances are aplenty (feel free to Imdb), and many in the region will instantly recognise the chiseled jawline of the face that’s launched several ad campaigns and worked with many brands and designers of note. For the column, it was easy to grab him for this lengthy questionnaire – man was trapped in a gilded cage, i.e. stuck in quarantine hotel till the authorities deemed him eligible for freedom. “Staring at the sea and sunset while trapped inside – send me the q’s.” .

Ok then.

First thing you do in the morning?
Get some sunlight in my eyes!

What in your wardrobe do you wear most often?
Probably my white low top Hermès sneakers I bought last year. Comfortable and great with any outfit.

What do you most crave at the end of the day?
A good night's sleep.

What song is currently in your head?
I posted an insta reel recently using Mary J Blige - All Night Long... now It's stuck in my head.

Tom Price with his constant companion Roxy

How do you find calm?
I find painting, surfing or hiking with my dog the best to unwind and just chill. Being out in nature is almost like a type of meditation I find.

What’s the most recent thing you’ve added to your collection?
I collect vinyl records and have recently added some '90s hip hop gems as well as some fresh underground house and electro. I've recently added some fresh underground house and UKG too.

Where do you buy your clothes?
Everywhere and anywhere.

What’s the most impressive dish you cook?
I make a killer stir fry... I think.

Who is your dealer, and what do they source for you?
Bandcamp. Music is my drug.

What is your exercise routine, and how often do you do it?
I try to find time for exercise daily. Gym, basketball, hiking and surfing are the most common. However, I'm a fan of all sports and will play anything.

If you could learn a new skill, what would it be?
Another language would be fantastic.

How much do you trust your gut instinct?
85%

Do you have a dream car?
Ferrari F50! Only 350 were ever made and I love the retro supercar vibe.

Are you wearing a watch? How many do you own?
At the moment I own around 5 or 6 watches.

Tell us about your favourite watch?
A gold and silver vintage Longines I bought from my buddy in Shanghai. Stylish without being too flashy.

If you could stick at one age, what would it be, and why?
Probably the age I'm at now! 36. A mix of athletic ability and life experience. A few years less and I'm too young, a few years more and I won't be able to carve it up on the basketball court like I used to!

How would others describe your look?
Pretty average.

If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be?
Hawaii would be nice. Waves during the day and stars at night. What more could you ask for?

What is your most treasured possession?
A pair of Technics SL1210 turntables a DJ friend gave to me before he passed away.

What are you afraid of?
Not a huge fan of jellyfish.

What is your vice?
Hong Kong style iced milk tea. Love that.

Favorite restaurants in Hong Kong?
Probably Carbone. One of the best Italian restaurants here with a good vibe. For something more local, I would say Super Duper Noodles in Sai Wan Ho. Lives up to the name!

Wine or whiskey?
Whiskey. Scotch. Some personal favourites include Kilchoman and Lagavulin. Special mention goes to the Talisker 18-year single malt. Good for any occasion.

Dream date on a yacht – where you sailing?
Hong Kong has hundreds of islands with all sorts of beaches, bays and coves that are easily accessible. It really is the perfect place for a yacht. There are a few prime spots that would definitely be date worthy. Bring a long a few bottles of champagne, add a clear night sky with a meteor shower and you’re set.

Last piece of advice you gave?
Only chickens accomplish something by sitting on their asses!

Prefer to drive or be driven?
Drive.

What is the car you are most attached to?
In my early twenties, I drove a BMW E30 convertible. Many fond memories. I'm a fan of vintage cars and this one is a bit of a classic.

Last Netflix binge?
Probably Squid Game

As an actor what roles appeal to you?
I think every actor, including myself, would love roles that are well written and unique. Anything interesting really.

Were you a stage kid? Theatre prodigy?
I did a few school plays growing up in Hong Kong. I remember playing Sweeney Todd once which was fun. But it wasn't until my university years that I took acting seriously and decided to dedicate my life to it.

What’s your favourite neighbourhood in your favourite city?
Shek O Village, Hong Kong

Bowie or Dylan?
Dylan is a Bonafide genius. But I'll have to go Bowie on this one.

First Person: Thomas Ng (伍禮騫)

At 34, Thomas Ng has carved a distinctive space in Hong Kong’s entertainment and wellness spheres as an actor, former Mr Hong Kong finalist, and dedicated athlete. A psychology graduate who spent his formative years in the UK, Ng returned to Hong Kong with a sharpened discipline forged through competitive rugby, athletics, and a passion for fitness that evolved into professional certification as a personal trainer.

After placing as a Top 10 finalist in the 2016 Mr Hong Kong pageant, he joined TVB and steadily built a reputation as a reliable and physically commanding supporting actor. Memorable roles include the dual university student characters in the long-running Come Home Love: Lo and Behold, alongside appearances in action-oriented series such as Flying Tiger and The Invisibles. His athletic edge earned him the affectionate nickname “體能怪物” (Fitness Monster) at TVB’s Star Sports Day, where he dominated in badminton - a sport in which he remains a registered player with the Hong Kong Badminton Association.

Beyond the screen, Ng maintains a disciplined lifestyle that blends performance with purpose. Whether delivering intensity on set or sharing training insights on Instagram (@thomas_nglaihin ), he embodies a modern Hong Kong archetype: grounded, versatile, and relentlessly driven. As his career matures, Thomas Ng continues to redefine what it means to be a complete performer - one whose presence commands attention both on and off camera.

24 hours before we went to print, this interview, profile and feature of supermodel Jon Kortajarena came in. He was working on a movie and called in between shots - and I had to stay up all night to write up the feature. Joys of high gloss, print magazine publishing...

As usual, my friend and photographer Olivier Yoan did his magic with a dream team behind the scenes.

The visuals, the layout, all worked... not sure anyone read my lengthy feature as this special menswear edition of the magazine was all about the look!

Happy Birthday James Wong!

Actor James Wong has been so great to work with over the years - it gives me great joy to wish him the very best on his birthday today.

Working with KOLs and their demanding ways (well, their demanding agents) is usually a nightmare but James is the easiest and most clear-cut person to work with. No muss, no fuss. And always on time - praise the lord.

Rant unrelated to James; other KOLs who've never worked a day in their over-privileged, under served lives often turn up late and don't understand the domino effect it has on others working on a shoot. There was one nightmare in particular, where this fella turned up on set four hours late and kept the entire crew twiddling their thumbs. I felt particularly bad for the makeup lady as she had a young child at home who wasn't having his dinner or going to bed waiting for his mother! We were in the middle of nowheresville in a studio in Chai Wan and when we finally wrapped up, the guy didn't even offer any of the ladies a chauffeured ride home or apology.

Meanwhile, Jimbo and I've worked on several projects together and he's chill throughout. And is a great laugh between long sessions on shoot day to keep everyone's spirits up.

Now as celebrity personal trainer, model, KOL (55,000+ followers on Instagram) and actor - quadruple hyphenate no less - he'st best (comedic) actor I've worked with in years.

Happy days funny man.

Savoir Faire: Michael Wong: Interview with Hong Kong Star: Cover story for High Life: Cigar Magazine

Hong Kong actor Michael Wong was in conversation with P.Ramakrishnan while he was blowing smoke up... at the Cigar Divan in Central.

Images by photographer William Furniss.

According to Will Smith’s chart buster “Getting Jiggy With It”, the cigar is “for the look” but he doesn’t light it. For Hong Kong actor, model, producer and writer, Michael Wong, the cigar is all about the taste, the flavour, the mood and so much more.

As we meet for an interview at the Red Chamber Cigar Divan, which is adjacent to the iconic Shanghai Tang flagship store in Central, Wong settles himself into a lounge chair and lights up one of his favourites. “I love a good cigar and I’m so grateful that David Tang has this place set up for us aficionados,” he says. “A great cigar does cover the full range of emotion, it’s always there for you at the right time. It;s that great companion that’s there when you’re in a contemplative mood, if you’re ecstatically happy… whenever.”

Before we continue, let me narrate you this cigar and David related tale,” he says with a laugh. “I owe him! I had asked him a favour a few years ago, when I was doing a series with Dennis Hopper. I wanted to give Dennis a gift on behalf of the cast and crew and so I called David because I knew Dennis loved his cigars. David generously gave me a box of Sir Winston and Trinidad, but unfortunately, the timing didn’t work out. By the time I got back to location in Shanghai, Dennis had already left and I had to share the cigars with the crew!”

So you feel guilty about that?

“No, not even that. What I felt really guilty about was that I called David on the phone, and I was in a taxi back here in Hong Kong and he must have been in the London. I was in a really giddy mood, and I must have woken him up. I was yelling, “Wei, wei, wei!” And I was laughing because I was in the car with friends and joking around and finally I heard him say, “I can hear you, who is it?!” and I hung up! I was so embarrassed! PS: Dear David, that was me on the phone that time and I owe you an apology, and my extreme gratitude in accommodating me.”

Even the people watching the photo-shoot join in the laughter.

American born, 6-foot tall, Hong Kong movie star Michael Wong has acted in over 60 films in the last 23 years. Li Cheng (also known as Miles Apart) was the first film he directed and co-produced, while he has also modeled for international brands and appeared on television shows. Married to the glamourous model Janet Ma, and brother of fellow actor/model Russell, Wong’s high-profile career so far has been a wild concoction of hits and misses.

Reflecting back, he says, “I think it was in a movie I was working on in 1995 when I first had a cigar on film. The projection of the mafia or bad guys smoking didn’t really bother me. When I played the role, I was the good guy in the film who was smoking. I convinced the director that it should be a trait in the character. I was lucky that he agreed with me so it was a great excuse to smoke during the day - as part of the job.”

Wong insists that he never smokes in front of his children and if there are kids around, he doesn’t like it when people light up either. “Places like this divan, or a cigar chamber, I think men should be gentlemanly about smoking cigars, be in company that permits, no, company that enjoys it as much s you do. All good cigar smokers are gentlemen first.”
