Best in Jewellery: Qeelin: Hong Kong premium jeweller

The Yu Yi Flower Moon Necklace

Unlike the often centuries-old maisons that frequent these pages, Qeelin is but a teenager in the mix. But perhaps, having just turned 18 (the now Hong Kong-based brand was launched in Paris back in 2004 by Dennis Chan and Guillaume Brochard), the house has morphed from the age of innocence to the age of majority.

Qeelin has been prolific of late. To commemorate its coming of age, Chan presented Wulu 18, which paid tribute to its roots and its first gourd-inspired Wulu collection. And the house has gently presented other aspects of Chinese culture to a global audience, letting the world at large discover stories, symbols, and art from ancient folklore and imparting a fresh aesthetic to contemporary jewellery. The iconography is distinct, and so is the sly touch of humour: the Bo Bo collection has featured pandas holding balloons or snowboarding, a jejune spirit but studded with precious stones.

But the piece from the past year that’s stood out to us for its artful simplicity and iconography is the elegant Yu Yi Flower Moon necklace, one of four uniquely designed necklaces (the collection depicts the harmony of sakura, lotus, orchid, and bamboo), made with 18-carat rose gold and intricately arranged pavé-set diamonds and emeralds. In its simplicity and form, the Yu Yi Flower Moon dazzles.

Jewellery for Men: Cartier

Recently, on the red-carpet event for Dune: Part Two, Timothée Chalamet premiered not only his highly anticipated film, but his collaboration with Cartier. Chalamet wore a unique creation crafted exclusively by the maison’s ateliers, with creative input from the Cartier ambassador himself. “Cartier creations have always been my first choice for important moments and getting to collaborate on this project only reinforced that for me,” says the actor. “I think Marie-Laure and I found a way to evoke the desert and harsh beauty of Dune in the Cartier style; a wonderful opposite to the candy-coloured enchantment of our first collaboration together.” (Chalamet is referring to the unique Cartier necklace he worked on with the brand for the Wonka premiere a few months earlier in late 2023.)

For Dune: Part Two, the latest accessory features more than 900 coloured stones; each hue inhabits one side of the modular, diamond-studded necklace, so you can roll the accessory in any way, shape, or form for a diverse combination of colours and stones. Even the spiked texture is deliberate and different from the usual box of treasures Cartier releases, and the expertise it takes to create such a seamless cord of jewels is truly incredible.

First Look: Art Basel Hong Kong 2024

Day 1 of Art Basel Hong Kong 2024.

Of the roughly 242 galleries from 40 countries, these are some of the highlights we saw briefly, as HKCEC welcomed us to view great art and sculptures of every vintage from across Asia, Africa, Americas and Europe - some exhibiting for the very first time in the city.

The opening day was meant to be a private affair, a handful of select invited VIPs to peruse at peace, but it was not meant to be. Already in the melee we saw a notable return to the fair's pre-pandemic scale, be it in number of guests, gallerists, artists and admirers.

The champagne crowd was out in full force--thank you Ruinart for the bubbles btw--and we've already seen keen interest on some of the larger pieces and collages. Watch this space for more as our stringers head out in the coming busy-as-can-be days (and nights!) ahead.

Best in Gear: KEF Speakers

LS60 Wireless

The bane of interior designers is tangled wires and the constant conundrum of hiding them from sight, especially if a chic room is about to be photographed, but KEF has put forth an aesthetic home solution with stellar audio quality to boot.

KEF introduces its very first wireless floor-standing speaker system to bring high-fidelity sound into your home and engulf your senses in an authentic, immersive experience. What we particularly love about this model is that it’s got the fingerprints of Hong Kong-based designer Michael Young all over it.

Young collaborated with the KEF product design team to create the slim LS60 Wireless that can slide into any living space with ease, and the svelte silhouette is only possible because of the advanced technology contained within the sleek cabinet. KEF offers the audio powerhouse in three elegant matte finishes: titanium grey, mineral white, and royal blue. As to how the LS60 Wireless is able to project pristine audio, that’s the result of KEF engineers incorporating the latest developments in tech—such as a Uni-Q driver array, trademarked Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT), and Uni-Core bass drivers—into the pretty package to eradicate distortion and maximise bass performance. As the name suggests, the unit supports WiFi and Bluetooth wireless connection, as well as cable options. Everything is interlinked with the KEF Connect app to permit listeners to stream music and podcasts at the touch of a button.

This Diamond-Studded Rolex Daytona Is Expected to Fetch HK$2 Million at Christie's Auction

As Christie’s prepares to ignite its first watch auction of the year, scheduled from 27 March to 9 April in Hong Kong for the 2024 spring season, the result of the local chapter is bound to set the tone for what lies ahead. 15 live and online auctions are in the offing in 2024, studded around the globe in various watch capitals, for enthusiasts and discerning collectors to congregate and bid as the hammer rises and falls with clockwork precision.

On 27 March, Christie’s is holding its online auction, with a live one following in May, and the attention of the watch world will be directed at the city for one simple reason: the numbers. Last year’s sales, particularly the ones from this past November, has made the Hong Kong chapter the cynosure of all eyes. On one autumnal evening, the auctioneers clocked in record global sales and participation from 39 countries spanning five continents. Important watches, those of historical value, the rarest of rarities, and mint collections were up for grabs; Christie’s presented three live watches auctions in Hong Kong and achieved a total of HK$222 million—the second-highest autumn sale at Christie’s Asia, ever.

TBT: Throwback Tuesday: Editor’s Picks: Menswear and Accessories for Autumn/Winter 2022

The opinionated fashion team wrung their Tom Ford-scented wrists and picked these sartorial selects and accessible accessories. Alliteration anyone?

As catwalk shows are kicking off in style and stilettos around the fashion capitals of the world this month, here’s a look at the menswear and accessories the fashion squad at Robb Report Hong Kong has kept tabs on. Elegant and refined houses only.

Brunello Cucinelli

A brand that whispers while others scream, Brunello Cucinelli is perfect for the city’s urban sophisticate. While it sticks to its DNA of masterful craftsmanship (over half of the production is made by hand) underpinned by fine fabrics, there’s none of the frumpiness that may suggest, with a lighter, more youthful vibe to the collection. The classic full linen look (main picture) was dapper enough, but all the linens are perfect for Hong Kong’s balmy weather—they let you breath in peace.

These Rare Qianlong Treasures Could Fetch HK$215 Million at Auction at Sotheby’s

The legendary Chinese monarch’s prized possessions are going under the hammer this April.

Just before the private, guarded wooden doors open, as suited security stand beside three Qianlong relics that are safely kept a metre behind a roped, cordoned-off area, we’re informed in hushed tones that China’s most powerful emperor’s treasures are within vicinity.

Even the estimated cost of these artefacts is staggering. And yet—we were told at an intimate press preview at Sotheby’s Hong Kong dotted with curators and connoisseurs—just three or four years ago, each piece would have expected to fetch over HK$100 million each. Now, three for HK$215 million seems like a bargain. An imperial white jade “Qianlong Yubi” seal with a twin-dragon knob carved in the early Qing dynasty (estimated at HK$70 million to HK$90 million), a rare imperial album featuring a portrait of the Qianlong Emperor by Jesuit artist Giuseppe Castiglione (HK$50 million to HK$70 million), and a glazed “dragon” moon flask with striking chiaroscuro effect (HK$35 million to HK$55 million) are up for grabs.

Breguet’s New Classique Répétition Minutes 7637 Is an Elegant Tribute to Its Founder

Abraham-Louis Breguet is the inventor of the game-changing gong-spring.

Breguet’s new Classique Répétition Minutes 7637 has arrived on our shores with elegant ease, cloaked in a black grand feu enamel dial with Arabic numerals and a secret signature.

What’s not a secret is the remarkable craft and technical expertise that Breguet brings to the table, especially to the Classique Répétition Minutes 7637. In a world of over-the-top, jewel-studded glamour, the new timepiece presents a sedated respite to luxury watches. Dressed in all black with rose gold accents, it’s a nod to Swiss-French watchmaker and company founder Abraham-Louis Breguet’s adept abilities and aesthetic vision to create handcrafted instruments of impeccable and—pardon the pun—timeless quality.

Cartier Unveils Its Latest Grain de Café Collection, Inspired By the Humble Coffee Bean

The essentials of gold, diamonds, coffee, and Cartier are reunited for a revived jewellery collection, with a nod to 1950s glitz and glamour.

Cartier’s latest Grain de Café collection, fronted by the ambassador of the brand—young actress Elle Fanning—was inspired by the humble coffee bean. Fanning is not only the face of the collection this year; she also wore signature pieces to the 2023 Met Gala in May.

Hublot and Depeche Mode Just Dropped a New Monochromatic Big Bang Watch

This latest collaboration is music to our ears—and it’s all for a worthy cause.

We’ve seen designer drops, bejewelled wrist candies, and innumerable watches of every stripe and provenance come our way, but it has been a long time since we’ve laid eyes on a rock ‘n’ roll watch collaboration worthy of piqued interest.

Hublot and Depeche Mode have come together to release the new Spirit of Big Bang Depeche Mode, paying tribute to the legendary new wave band’s latest album—Memento Mori—and subsequent world tour. Sporting a skull motif with an overlaid hourglass design, the matte black watch conjures up notions of the passage of time, the symbolism of the inevitable transience of life, and the profound role we each play on Earth. For those looking at the literal more than the mystical, it’s just a really cool watch for the latent rocker in you.

This Is the Van Cleef & Arpels Secret That Was Outed at Watches and Wonders 2023

Van Cleef & Arpels’s newest watch, based on the Ludo bracelet, is the best-kept “secret” in town.
Watches and Wonders 2023 held in Geneva showcased the best of the horological world and we’ve covered many finds extensively over the past few days . Above all, we had to take a moment to recognise the “wonder” provided by the fine folks at Van Cleef & Arples, who directed their gilded spotlight on the Ludo secret watch earlier this year.

The story traces back to the revered maison’s Ludo bracelet, a sparkling accessory from 1934 reflecting the jazzy Art Deco vibe of the period. Look for the brick-pattern meshwork made so exquisitely and assembled by hand, and the symmetry and geometry of the repetitive pattern on its glistening strap that looks like a jewelled belt, designed “to deliver optimal articulation and flexibility,” as the brand states. It is a piece so well-liked, they named it after the co-founder Louis Arpels (called Ludo by those in his close-knit circle).

Robb Report Hong Kong: 13 Best Brooches at the Oscars 2024, From Boucheron and Cartier to Tiffany & Co.

Now a red-carpet staple, the (often) diamond-festooned accessory is back with a bang.

At the Academy Awards, the tentpole film and fashion event of the year, the red carpet doubles as a catwalk, welcoming stars draped in the latest duds and dripping in diamonds. Red-carpet fashion is usually made interesting by the sheer force of women who set out to dazzle in dramatic gowns and jewels of unconscionable size. Most men wear penguin suits that pass muster, and while we love a tuxedo, to stand out in a sea of black and white, stars and their stylists have breached the fashion column insidiously through the humble lapel.

Boutonnières and brooches are all the rage this season, glittering and glimmering on stars of all stripes. Here are some of our favourite ones from the red carpet at the Oscars 2024.

IWC’s New Fully Luminous Pilot’s Watch Just Landed in Hong Kong

It’s slick, it glows in the dark, and it’s simply aces.

There’s a technical finesse and imperative functionality to the latest Pilot’s Watch Automatic 41 Black Aces from the storied IWC Schaffhausen that’s worth a second look. Perhaps even a third. Wear it in a low-light setting and you’ll spot the remarkable feature immediately: a fully luminous white dial—consisting of a Super-LumiNova ceramic disc—that emits a bright light in a photosensitive soft green hue, ideal for night-time visibility.

Developed in collaboration with pilots from the “Black Aces,” a pilot squadron based in California, the dial came about after innumerable dark chamber tests where the durable material was shown to emit light for more than 23 hours. The matte-black colour of the zirconium oxide ceramic case doesn’t reflect sunlight, providing no distractions to flying pilots. For another nod to the fine men and women in the crew, the case back of lightweight titanium is engraved with the “Black Aces” twin-engine jet against a backdrop of spades.

A Unique Roger W. Smith Series 2 Open Dial Watch Is Up For Sale Starting From HK$8.9 Million

Wristcheck is offering this British original for an avid collector.

As past luxury timepiece columns have revealed time and again, rare, collectible, more-often-than-not Swiss watches go under the hammer all the time in noted auction houses and on sale in notable stores. Staggering rates for vintage pieces are the norm; we barely raise an eyebrow when heirloom pieces are up for grabs after “death, divorce, and debt” (as Ted Loos so succinctly wrote in last year’s column about the auction market’s primary suppliers). Well, when it’s not the “three Ds,” nor an ancient relic from the alpine lands of horological excellence, we thought we should take a closer look at this lot.

H. Moser & Cie. Combines the Chinese Lunisolar Calendar and Gregorian Calendar in a Minimalist East-Meets-West Timepiece

Swiss maison H. Moser & Cie delivers another compelling and thought-provoking watch.

With only a 100 pieces made, the Endeavour Chinese Calendar Limited Edition timepiece by H. Moser & Cie—developed in partnership with Agenhor SA—is deceptively clever and a feat in ingenuity. Despite its complexity and high ambition, it looks effortlessly elegant. A technical marvel, the timepiece combines the Chinese lunisolar calendar with the Gregorian calendar in a fine balancing act. Displaying the 12 signs of the Chinese animal zodiac alongside moon phases on one side and solar phases on the other, it’s the perfect gift for any watch collector in the region, as we’re just months shy of the Year of the Dragon.

Eternal Elegance: What’s Behind the Cartier Tank Watch Iconography

The powerful, the famous, and the stylish have worn the Cartier Tank for over a century. Here’s why.

It’s hard to pinpoint when exactly we noticed the Cartier Tank in the public consciousness. Its striking simplicity doesn’t scream for attention, and yet, there it is, on Princess Diana’s wrist. The Crown has revived her image on social media platforms across the board and you can find the iconic Roman numerals standing out on a square-cut wristwatch, beaming below her reluctant smile. It’s the only accessory repeated often by fashion icon Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis; her Cartier Tank is unmissable in vintage black and white photographs. Clark Gable himself had such a unique one—the numerals on his dial were Arabic, not Roman.

If Gable’s watch ever makes it to an auction house, the estimate figure will most likely reach in the tens of millions. After all, as we go to publish, at Christie’s, there’s a rare and unusual 18-carat-gold asymmetrical Cartier wristwatch with the “Crash” deploying clasp that experts predict will go for HK$1.6 million. Only 400 of them exist in the world.

It’s the elegant refit that’s reaching for the stars.
There’s a certain beige and taupe uniformity to private jet travel that can be rather humbug after you’ve notched up a few hundred thousand miles in rarefied air. Crisp white linens, gold accents, high-tech gadgetry, and obsequious uniformed staff—you’ve seen one-private jet, you’ve seen them all.

7 Designer Jewellery Collections for Men, From Louis Vuitton to David Yurman

A look into the latest glittering accessories this season.

Robb Report Hong Kong has long established that jewellery for men and dazzling accessories of all shapes and sizes are here to stay. What once was an aberration to the norm, or a one-off capsule collection that was a smaller part of a greater picture, is now a given; nearly every designer brand has a gender-neutral and/or men’s collection as part of its portfolio.

Just three months into 2024 and we’ve been inundated with field notes on Louis Vuitton’s men’s jewellery line, David Yurman’s first high-jewellery collection for men, the rise of bespoke men’s jewellery by new designers, and Sotheby’s jewellery auction dedicated entirely to men. Earlier this year, Research and Markets predicted that the global jewellery market is expected to surpass sales of US$200 billion (HK$1.56 trillion) by 2027. From that massive pie, the men’s category represents a small slice—less than 10 per cent—of that worldwide market. However, the pie is growing exponentially as the beat of “gender is a social construct” resonates among the newer generation, and men of note and distinguished heritage are seen wearing sizeable rings, brooches, necklaces, and a diamond stud or two.

Prada Partners With Axiom Space to Create Spacesuits For a NASA Mission

After making impeccable wardrobes on Earth, Prada rockets to the final frontier.

Last year, so many designer partnerships were formed in the fashion sphere that it became an easy listicle: Balmain x Barbie, Disney x Givenchy, “Fenace” (Fendi x Versace), Adidas x Gucci, Louis Vuitton x Nike Air Force 1, among others.

Over the years, we’ve seen collaborations of the high-low, the street and the chic—it’s a proverbial potpourri to create a memorable mixology, but this one is simply out of this world. Prada has partnered with a commercial space company, Axiom Space, to create lunar spacesuits for NASA’s upcoming Artemis III mission, planned for the not-so-distant future of 2025—less than two years away.

Inside Silvano Lattanzi’s Shoemaking Studio, Where the Italian Craftsman Has Kept Every Shoe Model He’s Designed Since 1971

Put pop-culture-coloured, celebrity-imprinted trainers aside—we are bonkers about bespoke Italian shoes made of artisanal leather.

Since 1971, Italian shoemaker Silvano Lattanzi has been handcrafting exquisite leather shoes for discerning gentlemen the world over, and those who have strutted down to his studio in Milan will speak at length about his vast collection and archive. His library of leathers, patterns, design, cuts, colours, and patinas may be second to none.

Oh, did we say “library”? Correction—we meant “laboratory.”

“In a part of my laboratory, [I keep] all my collections that I have designed and made personally from 1971 to today. Each model (also the most remote one from 1971) can be still reproduced today,” Lattanzi tells Robb Report Hong Kong over the course of several email conversations. “The good God, he sent me to Earth to make ready-made shoes.”

It’s been a busy year for jewellery artist Anna Hu. She’s hopscotched around the globe to showcase her artistic assemblage of creations at newsworthy events. She joined The European Fine Art Foundation (TEFAF) in Maastricht for the second time in a row, where she was the only speaker representing high-jewellery exhibitors, alongside a panel of experts in the field of luxury. She generously donated a pair of Celestial Lotus earrings at the China Gala Auction, raising money for a worthy cause. The Best in Gear, From Bang & Olufsen and Samsung to Devialet and KEF

Turntable

Bang & Olufsen

Beosystem 72-23 Nordic Dawn Limited Edition

Groovy, baby, the 1970s are back! In March 2023, a BBC headline went viral for reporting that vinyl records outsold CDs for the first time in decades. For a generation of a certain vintage, nothing compares to the audible pleasure of vinyl. Well, a daring Danish brand heard the siren call and released a limited-edition vinyl turntable and stereo speakers to meet our needs: the Beosystem 72-23.

“As part of the Recreated Classics Initiative, the Beosystem 72-23 Nordic Dawn Limited Edition symbolises a new beginning for a future where audio products are designed to last, where luxury is expert craftsmanship that expands beyond the first life cycle, and where connectivity can be timeless,” says Mads Kogsgaard Hansen, head of product circularity at Bang & Olufsen.

As expected from the renowned brand, it’s a visual delight as much as audible; the Beogram 4000C turntable, created in warm colours with a birchwood panel and Nordic aesthetics, is accompanied by a matching pair of Beolab 28 speakers. A Beoremote Halo remote control allows for seamless operation of the system. Each unit comes with a walnut presentation box, which doubles as a storage cabinet for your record collection—it’s a nostalgic touch of the past that warms our heart, while the handy wireless charging station looks into the future.

Inside The Pedder Arcade, an Elevated Retail Space For Distinguished Menswear

A dream realised, menswear and real estate never looked so damn good.

Images can be deceptive, and the photos sent to us of The Pedder Arcade look like set pieces of a film based in New York (Woody Allen’s Manhattan comes to mind)—the elongated ink-blue metallic arches, the high ceilings, and the stellar view of skyscrapers with billboards of American stars peddling the latest threads from designer brands all scream sophistication.

Except, of course, it’s not New York City—it’s the new retail haven in the heart of Central, on the fifth floor of the Beaux-Arts-style Pedder Building. From top to toe, the newly opened Pedder Arcade exudes white-glove perfection and debonair flair.

Globe-Trotter’s New Limited-Edition Collection Pays Homage to Hong Kong

Emotional baggage? We sure are sentimental about these travel accessories.

Most luggage brands and travel accessories prioritise function over aesthetics—look at any airport carousel and stare in horror as dusted and busted, dirt-encrusted, often misshapen rectangles head your way. Unless it’s a piece from the haloed catalogue of famed British travel brand Globe-Trotter, which has just launched a must-have series that we’re unabashedly coveting.
